Understand the two banks first
Karnak and Luxor Temple stand on the east bank of the Nile. The Valley of the Kings and the temple of Hatshepsut at Deir al-Bahari are on the west bank. That simple geography helps explain why a list of nearby-looking names still needs a properly organised day. E6
The Valley of the Kings is a royal burial landscape across the river from ancient Thebes. Karnak is a temple complex, not another tomb stop. If you want variety, choosing one main experience from each bank can be more useful than adding several similar stops. E7E6
When a day trip makes sense
A day trip can work when you want a focused introduction and prefer to keep the same Red Sea hotel room. Ask for the complete schedule from your actual hotel: pickup, anticipated arrival in Luxor, time at each main site and expected return.
Read the difference between a stop and a visit. A photograph beside a monument is not the same as time inside it. Ask which admissions are included, whether any particular tomb or extra site costs more, and how much of the day is allocated to shops or other optional activities.
For a private trip, use the flexibility to remove something. A smaller programme can give you a better visit than the same long shared itinerary in a different car. Agree the priorities with the guide before departure so the day is not renegotiated at every stop.

What the overnight buys
An overnight stay gives you the option to separate the banks and let the evening remain in Luxor. It does not automatically make a packed programme relaxed; that depends on what you remove and how you arrange transport.
One possible structure is an east-bank visit on the first day, an unhurried evening and a west-bank programme the next morning. Another is to reverse the order around your transport and access arrangements. These are planning options, not a claim that either sequence is always better.
Compare the whole cost: hotel, two days of transport, guiding, admissions and the Red Sea accommodation you may still be paying for. Ask where luggage will be kept and whether the overnight room and return transfer are included in the same booking.
Choose by attention, not just the number of stops
If you enjoy reading the details on a wall or listening to a guide explain one object, leave room for that. If you simply want an introduction during a beach holiday, choose a short, clearly described set of highlights. Both are reasonable trips.
Carry the final inclusions list rather than a promotional collage. It should name the sites, explain which tickets are covered, identify the guide arrangement and make clear whether any boat crossing or lunch is optional. Verify current site access with the responsible operator for your date.
Leave the following morning lightly scheduled if you choose a long return day. The useful question is not how much Luxor you can fit onto the page, but how much of it you will still be paying attention to when you arrive.
