Egypt / Sea excursions

Orange Bay, Mahmya or Dolphin House: which day are you buying?

A beach stop, a day on an island and a reef-focused outing are different purchases. Read the programme before choosing the photograph.

Three boat-trip photographs can show the same blue water and sell three very different days. On one, the beach stop is the main event. On another, the boat and snorkelling stops occupy most of the programme. The distinction matters more than the colour of the sea.

Start by choosing what you want most: time ashore, time in the water or a relaxed outing with people who do not all want the same activity. Then compare the written programmes.

An island name is not a complete itinerary

Giftun excursions and a visit to Mahmya appear in the Egyptian Tourism Authority's Hurghada overview. But the destination name alone does not establish the hours ashore, the departure marina, the food or the transfer from your hotel. E1

For an Orange Bay or Mahmya quote, ask for the exact beach area and operator, how much time is scheduled on the beach and which parts of the day take place on the boat. Compare those answers before calling one trip better value than another.

There is no blanket ranking here. Two sellers using the same destination name can offer different inclusions. A beach-focused day may suit someone who wants to read under shade; a programme with short beach time and several water stops suits a different priority.

Put the minutes where you want to spend them

Make three columns: hotel transport, boat time and time ashore. Ask the provider to fill them in approximately. Include the waiting time at the marina, not just the sailing programme advertised on the page.

Then list the activities that are genuinely included. Ask whether snorkelling equipment and a guided session are part of the price, whether lunch is served on board or ashore, and which drinks or entrance charges are extra. If a child is travelling, confirm the child's age with that particular operator rather than applying another excursion's age band.

A diving option needs its own explanation. Introductory diving, certified-diver outings and snorkelling are not interchangeable descriptions. Ask for the actual programme, eligibility and supervision before paying for an upgrade.

Choose a Dolphin House trip for the reef day

A dolphin-themed excursion should still make sense if dolphins do not appear. Ask which reef or area the operator intends to visit and what the normal snorkelling programme looks like without a sighting.

HEPCA's encounter guidance rejects chasing, surrounding, touching or feeding dolphins, and calls for respect for their resting areas. CDWS also reminds operators to follow the relevant encounter codes. An excursion that promises pursuit is a poor fit for those principles. E8E9

Ask the operator how its crew responds when animals are resting or when several boats are already present. A good answer should describe how the crew limits disturbance, not guarantee a close-up photograph.

Get one final written summary

Before confirming, request a compact summary: pickup and expected return to your hotel, marina, operator, planned beach and water stops, included equipment, meals, total payable and cancellation arrangements. Ask what happens if sea conditions change the programme.

For mixed groups, ask explicitly about shade, toilets, seating and the option to stay aboard. A photograph of the bow cannot answer those questions. If you want a private boat, confirm the boat, guest capacity and programme rather than assuming that the shared trip becomes private at a different price.

Choose the outing whose ordinary day fits your group. Island names can help narrow the search; a clear programme is what tells you whether the day will feel right.
