What to see in Trapani's old town
Begin on the walkable historic peninsula. Corso Vittorio Emanuele is a useful orientation point, but the pleasure of Trapani is also in the smaller streets and changing views of the sea. Torre di Ligny stands near the western tip, while the Mura di Tramontana provide an attractive waterfront walk.
Late afternoon is pleasant for the seafront, especially during warm months. Bring water in summer and allow more time than a map suggests if you want to stop for coffee or photographs. The Italian tourism portal also highlights the town's churches, waterfront walls and salt-panning heritage.
Erice: the hilltop town above Trapani
The medieval town of Erice sits high above the coast. It is known for stone streets, viewpoints and a cooler, windier atmosphere than the waterfront. The Trapani–Erice cable car takes roughly ten minutes and offers views towards Trapani and the Egadi Islands.
Do not treat the cable car as a guaranteed year-round service. Its official 2026 schedule includes seasonal opening periods and maintenance closures; the operator currently lists a closure period from 3 November to 4 December 2026. Check the official operating calendar before planning a day around it. Road access and local transport are alternatives, depending on conditions and schedules.

The Trapani salt pans
South of the city, salt pans form a distinctive landscape of shallow basins, channels and traditional salt-making structures. The colors change with the light and weather; sunset photography is popular, but not every basin is publicly accessible. Use established visitor areas and marked routes rather than stepping onto working salt-production land.
If you have a car, the salt pans fit well into an afternoon trip. Without one, research public transport or a local excursion in advance. A photo stop and a guided visit are different experiences, so confirm opening hours if you plan to enter a museum or reserve area.
Day trip to the Egadi Islands
The Egadi Islands are among Trapani's biggest attractions, but the crossing is an independent transport leg. Favignana is the easiest choice for most first-time visitors; Levanzo is compact and quiet; Marettimo works best when you have more time.
Choose the return sailing before committing to a bicycle rental or boat excursion. Ferry and hydrofoil services depend on the travel date and sea conditions. For current schedules, use Liberty Lines S3.

A simple two-day itinerary
Day 1 — Trapani: Walk the old town, visit the seafront, enjoy a long lunch and spend late afternoon around the waterfront or salt pans.
Day 2 — Choose one excursion: Head to Erice if you want architecture and panoramic views; choose Favignana for a ferry-and-coast day. Attempting both on the same day is likely to be rushed, particularly outside peak summer.
With a third day, you can add the excursion you skipped or explore another part of western Sicily.
Where to stay and how to move around
Staying in or close to the historic center suits visitors without a car. It puts restaurants and walking routes nearby and may simplify access to the port, although you should still verify which pier your ferry uses. If you plan multiple road trips, check hotel parking restrictions before booking; historic streets can be narrow and traffic-limited.
For airport arrivals, compare the destination of your flight with your accommodation and any onward island sailing. Trapani Airport and Palermo Airport require different ground-transfer arrangements, so allow realistic connection time instead of booking a ferry close to your landing time.
Frequently asked questions
Is Trapani worth staying overnight? —
Yes, especially if you want to see Erice, the salt pans or the Egadi Islands. An overnight stay avoids turning the entire trip into a transport connection.
Can you visit Trapani without a rental car? —
You can explore the historic center on foot and take excursions using ferries or local transport. A car offers more flexibility for scattered coastal attractions.
Can Erice and Favignana be visited on the same day? —
It may be possible with favorable schedules, but it is rarely the most relaxed use of a day. Choose one as your main excursion.
Where do ferries to Favignana leave from? —
Trapani port has multiple berths. Verify the operator and specific departure quay on your ticket, rather than relying on a generic map pin marked “Trapani Port.”
