Egadi Islands Travel Guide: Favignana, Levanzo & Marettimo

Plan the Egadi Islands from Trapani: choose Favignana, Levanzo or Marettimo, compare ferry options, avoid day-trip mistakes and check 2026 schedules.

The Egadi Islands (Isole Egadi) lie just off western Sicily and make one of the most rewarding short trips from Trapani. But the three main inhabited islands are not interchangeable. Favignana is the easiest first visit, with beaches and bicycle-friendly roads; Levanzo is small and quiet, ideal for a slow day by the water; Marettimo is farther away and best for walkers and travelers interested in boat trips along a rugged coastline.

If you have just one spare day, choose one island rather than trying to rush all three. If you have two or three days, staying overnight makes the experience more relaxed and gives you room to change plans when the sea is rough.

Which Egadi island should you choose?

Favignana — First visits, coves, cycling, swimming — The largest choice of services; distances between beaches still matter.

Levanzo — A quiet harbor, coastal walks, simple island atmosphere — Fewer services and a slower pace; check the return sailing carefully.

Marettimo — Nature, hiking, sea caves and longer stays — More exposed to weather-related transport changes.

Favignana's Cala Rossa and Cala Azzurra are famous, but they are not conventional sandy resort beaches. Depending on where you go, access may involve rock, steps, or uneven ground. Wear sensible footwear and do not assume every cove is appropriate for small children or travelers with limited mobility.

How do you reach the Egadi Islands?

Trapani is the usual departure point, with passenger fast craft operated by Liberty Lines and conventional ferries on selected routes. Marsala also has certain passenger connections. A fast crossing from Trapani to Favignana is commonly around half an hour, but timing varies by departure, route and weather; check the exact sailing rather than planning around an estimate.

Liberty Lines publishes date-specific departure schedules and ticket prices on its official website. The currently published Egadi timetable took effect on 12 October 2026. Always select your actual travel date; seasonal timetables and weather disruptions can change the options dramatically.

Passenger hydrofoil or conventional ferry? —

A hydrofoil is useful when you want a faster crossing without a car. A conventional ferry may be preferable for different luggage or vehicle requirements where vehicle carriage is permitted. Check your ticket's departure pier and boarding rules: Trapani has several port berths, and the correct boarding location depends on the operator and sailing.

Do not book a tightly timed onward flight or train immediately after an island crossing. Marine conditions can cause disruptions, and the last return sailing is a particularly poor place to gamble on a connection.

A realistic one-day itinerary from Trapani

Morning: Take an early sailing to Favignana. Collect a bicycle or e-bike only if you are comfortable riding on shared roads. Start with a manageable coastal area rather than trying to visit every famous beach.

Lunch: Return towards Favignana town for lunch, water and a break in the heat. This also makes it easier to judge whether you have time to explore another cove.

Afternoon: Enjoy a second swimming stop or visit the former Florio tuna-fishery complex if opening hours and your interests allow. Leave enough time to return your rental and walk to the correct boarding point.

Return: Aim to be at the pier comfortably before the sailing's stated boarding deadline. Keep the booking reference and identification accessible.

A Levanzo day trip works better if your aim is quiet surroundings rather than covering many attractions. Marettimo rewards a longer visit rather than a rushed afternoon.

When is the best time to visit?

Late spring and early autumn can be pleasant for walking, with fewer peak-summer crowds. Sea temperature, ferry frequency, accommodation availability and wind are separate considerations, however. A sunny forecast does not guarantee calm water or uninterrupted fast-craft services.

Summer requires more advance planning for popular crossings and bicycle rentals. In shoulder season, fewer departures make a missed return more consequential.

Common planning mistakes

Trying to visit three islands in one day. It is technically possible on certain schedules, but your experience may become more about queues and piers than the islands themselves.

Confusing ports. Verify Trapani versus Marsala, the boarding pier and your arrival point before booking onward transport.

Assuming a beach means sand. Several scenic coves have rocky approaches, and some require a short walk.

Ignoring the final ferry. Choose the return before planning the rest of the day. Allow time to return bicycles and reach the quay.

Depending on fixed prices from an old blog. Ferry prices depend on route, service, passenger category and date. Use the operator's booking screen for a current quote.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Favignana without a car? —

Yes. Most day visitors use passenger ferries and explore town on foot, bicycle, e-bike or local transport. Choose activities according to your mobility and the weather.

Is Favignana or Levanzo better for a first visit? —

Favignana generally offers more variety and practical services for a first visit. Levanzo is better if a relaxed, quieter experience is your priority.

Can I take the ferry from Palermo? —

Trapani is the practical departure point for most standard Egadi trips. From Palermo, plan the journey to Trapani separately rather than assuming a direct year-round island sailing.

What if my ferry is cancelled? —

Follow the operator's instructions about rebooking or refunds and leave flexibility in your accommodation and onward travel plans. Check the operator's live notices before heading to the port.
