Barcelona Airport to City Centre: Aerobús, Metro, Train or Taxi?

Compare Barcelona Airport T1 and T2 transport: Aerobús A1/A2, L9 Sud metro, R2 Nord train, taxis and practical ticket rules.

Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN) has two passenger terminals, T1 and T2, and your choice of transport depends on both your terminal and your hotel's neighborhood. Visitors heading to Plaça Catalunya may prefer a different route from travelers staying near Sants, Plaça Espanya or the edge of the city.

The main options are Aerobús, the L9 Sud metro, the R2 Nord suburban train, city buses, taxis and private transfers. The most common mistake is choosing a service based only on a low ticket price, then discovering it does not stop where you expected.

Quick comparison

Aerobús — A1 serves T1; A2 serves T2 — Your destination is near one of its central stops.

Metro L9 Sud — T1 and T2 — Your journey connects easily to another metro line.

R2 Nord suburban train — Airport rail station associated with T2 — Your destination is well served by the suburban train network.

City bus 46 — T1 and T2 — You are heading towards Plaça Espanya and prefer a budget option.

Taxi or private transfer — Airport pickup facilities — You value a direct trip, luggage space or a specific meeting arrangement.

Aerobús A1 and A2

The airport bus is straightforward if you want to reach a central stop without navigating multiple metro changes. Aena identifies A1 as the service between T1 and Plaça Catalunya, and A2 as the counterpart for T2. Check the stops, operating hours and current price on the operator's website before paying.

Remember that the bus goes to its published stops, not to every hotel. If you are staying in a pedestrian area or a neighborhood away from the route, you will need a walk, taxi or connection at the city end.

L9 Sud metro: both terminals, but a transfer may be needed

The L9 Sud metro connects T1 and T2 with the wider network. TMB lists connections at Torrassa (L1), Collblanc (L5) and Zona Universitària (L3), among other interchange possibilities. It is not a direct metro line to Plaça Catalunya; use a journey planner for your specific hotel.

Important ticket rule: an ordinary single metro ticket and T-casual are not valid to enter or leave the airport stations on L9 Sud. You need an eligible pass or the dedicated Airport Ticket. This is one of the most useful details to check before buying the cheapest-looking transport card.

R2 Nord train: remember the terminal

The suburban R2 Nord line is another useful connection, especially for some routes towards central railway stations. Its airport access is at T2; travelers arriving at T1 should allow extra time for the free airport terminal shuttle to reach the train connection.

Aena confirms a free 24-hour shuttle between terminals. The train may be useful if your destination is near a station, but it is not necessarily the most direct route to a hotel elsewhere in the city.

Is a taxi or private transfer worth it?

For two adults with light luggage, public transport can be efficient. For a family with a stroller, several large suitcases or accommodation with awkward connections, a licensed taxi or pre-arranged vehicle may save time and effort.

Clarify the total fare, vehicle capacity and pickup arrangement before accepting a private transfer. If your accommodation is in a pedestrianized historic street, the nearest legal vehicle drop-off point may be a short walk away.

Three mistakes to avoid

Using the wrong Aerobús line. A1 and A2 are associated with different terminals; verify before boarding.

Buying an invalid metro ticket. Airport metro access has special validity rules; not all common city travel tickets work at T1/T2.

Ignoring the terminal shuttle. If your flight is at T1 but you plan to take the R2 Nord train, leave time to reach T2.
